Before you open Finding Mary Smith, here’s a deeper glimpse into the life of the woman whose story sparked it all… She was born in Chicago and raised in Michigan—but her story stretches far beyond the Midwest. In 1968, she won a national singing competition—South of Youth USA—with finals hosted by Duke Ellington in New York City. Yes… that Duke Ellington. Basically American Idol before it ever existed. She became part of the heart of New York City’s folk scene in the late 60s, performing at legendary spots like The Bitter End, The Gaslight Cafe, and Kettle of Fish—immersed in a vibrant, ever-evolving community of artists. From there, she took to the road, living the coffeehouse circuit life and performing across the country.🎶 And then there’s the music…🎤 She recorded “Summer Go Slow” for Kapp Records—but it wasn’t the song she was originally meant to record. That song, “Long Long Time,” written by her friend Gary White, ultimately found its way to Linda Ronstadt. A twist of timing, a missed opportunity… or something more?
